Ezekiel 37:1-14 teaches us an important lessons about the dry bones in our lives - what causes them and how to bring them back to life. Have you ever felt like your were drying up and experienced a feeling of hopelessness. Many Christians have felt that way and tried to blame their condition on someone else. Some would go to the extent of changing churches, change jobs, change friends, and even change spouse. However, the problem is usually internal (you) versus external (others).
Ezekiel's gospel reveals his vision, in which he was carried by God and set down in a valley that was full of dry bones. God made Ezekiel walk around and look at all the bones. Ezekiel makes the statement, in verse two, "There were vary many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry." At this point God directed a question at him that shook him to his heart. God asked him in verse three, "Son of man, can these bones live." He responded with an emphatic, "O Lord God, You know." The valley of dry bones contextually is speaking to a despondent and hopeless people. Jerusalem was such a ravaged and exiled people. They had once seen and experienced the glory of God, but now they were a defeated and destitute people. A dry bone experience is the inheritance of those who do not live in Christ (the vine) and are not restored, nourished, guided and comforted by His words and promises on an ongoing basis.
In the Book of Ezekiel, the dry bones did lived again because they rededicated themselves to God and were restored physically, emotionally and spiritually. This is a beautiful picture of what the Christian lifestyle should look like - fruitful branches abiding in the vine. Many of our lives are dry because our joy, peace, hope, desire, and excitement are attached to the wrong treasures that can only offer temporary, not permanent satisfaction. Yes, your dry bone can live - your broken relationships can live, your broken finances can live, and your broken body can live.
